A great way to ensure that you have a regret-filled future is living your life based on one word. What’s that word?
It’s…SOMEDAY. It’s a harmless word. A word that in some ways sounds infused with hope. Someday I’ll finish my degree, someday I’ll start my own business, someday I’ll settle down. That word can lull you into thinking that you didn’t just say “no” or “never” to your dream. That one word can make you think that the future will magically get better on its own if you just keep doing what you’ve always done. But that isn’t really hope.
I think that’s the definition of insanity. (Keep doing the same thing and things will magically get better.) “Someday” is just a thin veneer to justify postponing and delaying hard work or hard decisions. Maybe you need to read that last sentence again.
Have you ever delayed hard work or making a hard decision by using the word, “someday”? Someday I’ll get out of debt…someday I’ll take my faith seriously…someday I’ll lose weight.
We usually attach a “because” to our someday. We can’t make this change, decision, or move toward our goal today because of _________. What “because” have you been using lately to keep you from your goal?
This type of “someday” or “one day” thinking often takes the form of “When & Then” thinking. When ______ happens then I’ll ________. When I get married then I’ll stop looking at porn. When I get a raise then I’ll be more generous. When things slow down then I’ll take my faith more seriously. The intentions are always great, but “when” never comes. The problem isn’t the goal (then), the problem is “someday” (when).
What if you turned “someday” into “today”? As in this day, right now. What if you took the steps you know that you can take instead of making excuses about the ones you can’t make…yet? That’s the key word…yet. I’ve seen in my own life that when I take the steps that I know that I can take toward my goals, even though I’m not sure about how to take other ones, doors open that I wasn’t expecting. God rewards and honors obedience. Many times that obedience will require faith. God is growing your character as you move forward in faith.
What hard work or hard decision have you been postponing? What one step could you take TODAY to guarantee you won’t regret tomorrow?
