Ever been around someone who all they could talk about is the past? They love to tell stories about their glory days, which is fine for people in a nursing home. They’ve lived a good life. There is far more behind them than in front of them, but that isn’t true for you.
You have years, decades in front of you. How will you use them?
It’s easier than you think to give up on your dreams, but you can’t. Here is the simple reason why…
If you stop using your dreams and goals to drive your life, then the frightening question is who or what then is driving your life? The answer usually is either circumstances or someone else. Could the reason life feels so out of control be because you’ve let someone else in the driver’s seat? You are just dutifully going along for the ride. When did you start letting someone else determine the direction and destiny of your life?
Maybe it’s been awhile…you’ve been so caught up in life that you can’t remember what those dreams were. That’s okay…at least you recognize you’ve gotten off course and maybe some of those dreams were self-centered. Start with this question…
If you died today what would you regret not accomplishing or doing?
Your life and how you use it is a stewardship issue. God has given you life and time for a purpose greater than yourself. God didn’t put you here on this earth to watch history, He put you here to make history. He wants you to be an active participant in changing the world.
I’ve never spoken with someone who was near death and wished they had watched more shows about celebrities dancing. I have heard other regrets, but never the things that popular culture spends most of its time and money on.
It’s time to start dreaming new dreams because you will never achieve more than your dreams.
Think about it this way…
Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen. -Ephesians 3:20-21
Let that sink in… “more than you can ask or imagine.” We think we want more for us than God does, but that’s not true. God gave you the dream and He wants to do more than you can imagine! Don’t have low expectations of God (Isaiah 46:9).
God isn’t offended by your biggest dreams. He is offended by complacency and mediocrity.
It’s a slap in God’s face that you have the education, health, time, and resources to be able to read a blog like this and still be content with mediocrity. Jesus called someone like that “wicked and lazy” (Matthew 25:14-30). Your life and how you use it is a stewardship issue.
Your dreams should be getting bigger with each passing year because your faith keeps growing. You trusted God to do the impossible, He did, and now you have to redefine what “impossible” means.
