If I asked your spouse, your kids, or your roommate if you are a fun person…what would they say? When was the last time they saw you laugh? Could they name something fun they did with you recently?
No one wants to be boring or serious all the time, and yet the difficulty for most of us is that fun doesn’t seem like a priority…there are other things that seem way more important than fun. It just doesn’t seem urgent in our weekly schedule.
But fun is a secret ingredient to relationships that many people miss. Fun makes a relationship go deeper. Fun is like Gorilla Glue. It keeps you cemented to each other.
Fun reminds us that life may be hard but there is also joy that can be found in the midst of hardships. Fun reminds us that this too will pass. Fun can be an anchor in the midst of a storm. It reminds us that weeping may endure for the night but joy comes in the morning.
Your kids need a collection of fun memories to get through hard times. Those fun times remind them that the joy of living outweighs the temporary pains of the moment.
Nehemiah 8:10 reminds us that the joy of the Lord is your strength.
Not only do your kids need a collection of memories…
You need a collection of memories for when your children grow up and move out. A collection you will hold on to. The time you spend with your kids making memories now, is disproportionate to the return. The investment you make in the first 18 years determines your relationship with them over the next 50 years.
Some of you need to have fun with your parents…you don’t have a single good memory to hold onto when they pass. What if you could create one or two fun memories that you could hold onto instead of holding on to the past hurt? You could always have that fishing trip…or that trip to NYC…or that dinner at the Hibachi Grill where your Dad lost his eyebrows to the open flame. That way, even though you might not have had the childhood you wanted or deserved you can have a collection of fun memories to hold on to.
Not everything in life is fun but you can make SOME THINGS fun.
What is something fun you can to do today? What is something fun you can plan for this week? Your relationships will get stronger and you’ll never regret a collection of fun memories with those you love most.
